A Single Man…A Gripping Story
By: Ben Hayle, NMTV

Tom Ford in his directorial debut brings us A Single Man, staring Colin Firth in his Golden Globe nominated role. The film is set in Los Angeles in 1962; Firth plays George Falconer, a gay man who is struggling with the recent and sudden death of his partner Jim. The film follows a single day in the life of George, the day he has decided to end his life.

When we meet George we see a man who has taken care of every last detail, a man who has nothing left to live for and a man who has resigned himself to the fact that today is the day that he will be “set free”. As George starts to move through his day he starts to see the beauty in the world that he will be leaving behind. Ford illustrates this beauty by subtle changes in color as the film progresses. Ford visibly changes the film from cold and drab to warm and comforting right before your eyes. These color changes become more prevalent and more noticeable as George goes through his day. I found that this was a very interesting way to convey emotion and I thought that it was a nice touch by a first time director.

Firth really carries this film, Ford was very lucky to find an actor with Firth’s ability to star in this film. Firth is flanked by Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, and Nicolas Hoult, the entire cast brings solid performances but Firth steals the show. The way he was able to convey emotion through a character who has had to hide so much of who is really is was fascinating to watch. Firth a favorite of the 2009 film festival circuit is sure to be a favorite of the awards show circuit this winter.

A Single Man is a film that is a gripping story of a man who is struggling to grieve in a society who does not recognize his grief. Colin Firth delivers a great performance and Tom Ford does an admirable job as a first time director. A Single Man earns 4 out of 5 stars, and because of its sexual content and mature story it is only appropriate for adult audiences.
