In Predators we are taken to the Predator planet, a game reserve as far as the eye can see and the humans are the game. The predators bring some of Earth’s most evil and feared people to their planet only to hunt them. The movie opens with a new batch of humans arriving on the planet. In the early moments the humans fight each other before realizing that there only chance of surviving will be working together.
When Robert Rodriguez announced that he was bringing the sci-fi action Predator franchise back to the big screen many were excited to see what he would come up with. Predators will thrill fans of the original and at the same time attract new fans to the franchise. The film’s cast works great together and at the same time they all give solid individual performances. Adrien Brody plays the lead character, Royce, and while you might not think of him as an alpha male of a group of mercenaries he pulls off the character and looks like a natural doing it. The main characters have enough depth and mystery that it would be interesting to have an entire movie based on any one of them alone and when you put them all together it makes for a great movie.
Director Nimrod Antal creates a high level of suspense throughout the film. Some movies try to hard to create suspense but in Predators the suspense is built through silence and subtle music. There is never one of those “oh don’t go in there, that’s were the predators are” moments. It is refreshing to see a film maker actually put in the time and effort to build the suspense instead of manufacturing the suspense.
Predators sets up perfectly to jump off into a new series of films. The characters who are left standing at the end of the film could be the subject of a sequel or learning the back story of some of the characters in a prequel would be just as interesting. Predators is not a movie for anyone under 18 it is very violent and at times gruesome, parents beware this is not a film to take your teenage kids to. As someone who was only 6 years old when Predator came out I am part of what I think will be a new generation of fans for this franchise. Watch out for Predators to surprise you and surpass your every expectation it definitely did for me. I give Predators 4 out of 5 stars. |
