Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights) have teamed up for a fourth time on the big screen. This time Ferrell is joined on screen by Mark Wahlberg in the buddy cop film The Other Guys. Taking place in New York City, Ferrell and Wahlberg play Allen Gamble and Terry Hoitz. Gamble and Hoitz consistently watch other officers solve the big time cases and bring down the worst criminals, disliked by even their fellow officers they truly are The Other Guys. |

Gamble and Hoitz and polar opposites, Gamble is content in being an afterthought in fact he enjoys doing the paperwork so other officers can “fight crime”. Hoitz was an up and coming homicide detective until he made an egregious error in shooting one of New York’s most famous residents. Hoitz still dreams of a life on the streets, but he has recently been demoted to a desk job and teamed up with Gamble. Hoitz is able to convince Gamble that it is time to leave his desk and computer behind and get out on the streets. Things go terrible and eventually the duo are demoted and split up. Gamble however continues to investigate the case that they had been working on and eventually gets Hoitz to team up with him again to take down the bad guys and earn their place in police history.
The Other Guys simply put is the funniest movie I have seen this year. The mix of humor and action is perfect and Ferrell is at the top of his game. It is nice to see Ferrell playing the calm, cool, and collected character instead of his normal outlandish and eccentric character. He pulls off this performance and is well complemented by Wahlberg’s over-the-top macho police man persona. This film features several other actors who also show off there comedic chops including Michael Keaton who plays the precinct Captain while moon lighting as a Bed Bath and Beyond salesperson. Also Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson play the detectives that Gamble and Hoitz aspire to be. While Ferrell and Wahlberg are the stars of the film Jackson and Johnson steal the show. The opening scene which features Jackson and Johnson in pursuit of a group of robbers is perhaps the funniest film scene I have ever seen in a theatre.
The only problem, if you can even call it a problem, that I have with The Other Guys is that the first 20 minutes are so hilarious that the next 90 minutes have a hard time living up to that standard. This causes the film at times to drag a little bit because the viewer is remembering the hilarious start. The whole movie will make you laugh but the first 20 minutes will make you laugh so hard you will cry!
Overall I give The Other Guys 4 out of 5 stars, you will not be disappointed by this movie and it will provide you with a bevy laughs. |
