Centerville City Council

The city of Centerville has three canditates running in this race.  They are:

 Steve King

About Me:

Steve King is running for Centerville City Council. Steve grew up in White Bear Lake and is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Steve met his lovely wife in Centerville and they were married three years later. They purchased a house in Centerville because the population was 500 and they liked that small-town feeling. He used his GI Bill to attend Meat Processing School and went on to work for several agricultural companies. In the late 1980’s he also worked part-time for the City of Centerville’s Maintenance Department. He has also owned a successful chimney cleaning and repair business until a back injury forced him to quit. During those years he was blessed with three beautiful children and, now, one grandson. He presently is a self-employed Barber.

Throughout the years Steve has received various certificates, licenses and diplomas. He enjoys learning and is constantly striving to improve his world of knowledge. The companies he has worked for, the ownership of a business and now being a self-employed Barber, has taught him a great deal about business and the importance of communication and listening skills.

Important Issues:
 First, city spending is the lead issue. There should be a (1) thorough and careful review of all city expenses and (2) review and discourage the use of any further grant monies that do not increase the tax base. These types of grants have not only been created through our Federal/State tax dollars but, also, commits the residents to higher taxes and infringes on property rights;

Second, review past and upcoming ordinances and the consequences it will have on individual rights and property rights;

Third, question the necessity of User Fees being charged to citizens when there is no use. What’s next? User fees for roads, bike paths, sidewalks, future street lights, etc.; and

Fourth, keep the citizens informed by keeping the City’s website current and also adopt a more flexible Q&A time for the citizens at Council meetings

Political Philosophy:
People should only be governed by a true believer of our constitutional rights and always be treated with respect and dignity no matter what classification society has labeled them. An elected official has the awesome responsibility and trust of the people to make moral and common sense decisions for the people and to continually protect individual rights, property rights and state’s rights and to never let them be compromised!

Only through the vigilance of the people will the leadership remain strong and truly representative of the people! They are there to lead not divide.

A community’s unique character and history is an extension of every family that lives there. Only the people know what is best for their community. No leader or outside entity should ever be allowed to reshape a community without their consent.

Important Issues:
I would like to continue a focus on finding a balance between controlling taxes and maintaining the city in a way which makes it attractive to future home owners and businesses. I would like to increase business development along 20th Ave. I would like to maintain the safe, clean and friendly neighborhood environment we currently have. I would like to continue the collaborative efforts we have established with our neighboring cities in an effort to increase efficiencies and eliminate redundancy. I would like Centerville to be known as business friendly and a place where the residents have a voice.

About Me:
Matthew Montain is running for Centerville City Council. He is a lifelong resident of the area. Matthew attended Centennial High School and the University of Minnesota Crookston. His hobbies include running, golf, volleyball, and farming. Matthew dedicates his time by volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Unity Hospital and has helped Team Ortho. Matthew has strong ties to Centerville with a family business being operated in the city for the past 25 years, as well working full time in the area as a land application consultant and supervisor.

Important Issues:  Important issues to Matthew are the city budget, how tax dollars are spent, development of the city, and creating a place that Centerville residents are proud to call their home. The budget is a major issue because every resident is impacted by the taxes paid into the city. Matthew believes that being accountable and fiscally responsible. City development is an important issue because the residents of Centerville have had lot of change presented to them over the last few years, Centerville has areas to develop and he believes that we should welcome new business. The city needs to make its decisions in the best interest for its residents. All issues that approach the City are important; making well informed responsible decisions will create a place that Centerville residents are happy to call their home.

Political Philosophy:
   Matthew’s political philosophy is that people who make up the city government are elected by the people of the city. Elected officials should base their decisions on what is right for the City as a whole and not create a personal agenda. Be responsible honest and ethical.
