Death at a Theatre

I know it sounds like a great idea to take a 3-year-old British comedy and remake an American version of it; but just because it worked for “The Office” doesn’t mean it will always lead to success. Logic aside, the wise people at Screen Gems decided to remake Death at a Funeral, the 2007 blockbuster that scored just over $8 million domestically.

The movie opens as Aaron is preparing for his father’s funeral, which is to be held at his parents’ house, where Aaron (Chris Rock) and his wife Michelle (Regina Hall) have also been living. We quickly learn that Aaron is jealous of his brother’s success, and the extended family is more or less crazy. Couple some crazy characters with inadvertent hallucinogen ingestion, and a blackmailing midget, and you are left with one of the least intelligent comedies ever.

The main humor is the film is centered around feces, family hatred, and sex with implied minors. Now, I’ll let you be the judge of whether or not you find these things funny, but for me, this movie dragged on and on for no real reason. The characters never developed throughout the movie, and I was left wondering why this was ever remade.

The sole glimmer of humor came from Oscar (James Marsden), playing the fiancé of the niece of the deceased. Oscar spends the day on drugs crafted by his future brother in law, and has some funny drug-induced moments – mostly while talking plants and statues. But it was nowhere near enough to save this film.

With its poor mix of bathroom humor and physical “comedy”, it never develops into any more than a series of subpar gags. The forced happy ending doesn’t work, and it’s impossible to believe that any of these shallow characters could turn into the loving family you see at the end.

Even though it’s only April, I’m going to place this movie in the category of one of the worst five movies to be released in 2010. ½ of a star – don’t waste your time or your money and this poorly written movie.
