As the seventh book of this tale begins, the Ministry of Magic has been infiltration by some of Voldemort’s followers, and they have named Harry Potter as the number 1 enemy of the wizarding community. Harry, Ron and Hermione are forced to head out on their own and continue the search for the remaining 4 horcruxes. (For the uninitiated, Voldemort is the dark lord, and he has separated his soul into 7 different pieces, hiding 6 pieces of soul in 6 different objects called horcruxes, keeping only 1/7 of his soul in his body. In order to kill Voldemort, Harry Potter must destroy all 7 horcruxes before attempting to kill Voldemort, otherwise all his efforts will be for not.) As the trio searches for the horcruxes they slowly travel across Britain, hiding in places for only a short period of time. Simultaneously, Voldemort and his dark army is searching for and trying to kill Harry Potter.
So, the plot may sound weird to those who aren’t familiar with the books or movies. I would highly recommend that these people start at the beginning and don’t just dive into the finale.
Any fan of the books will be absolutely enamored with part 7.1. The depth of character that this film dives into is substantially greater than ANY of the previous Potter flicks. It pauses long enough to recognize that no one is satisfied with their current situation, and realizes that everyone needs change in some way or another. Unfortunately, this film does not provide that change, but merely wets the lips for the true finale in 7.2.
If only this was the caliber of Potter film delivered in parts 2-5, maybe the masses wouldn’t think that these films were only for children.
Personally, as a Harry Potter superfan, I loved this movie as much or more than any other movie I have seen thus far in 2010. The only thing that really bothers me is that I have to wait 8 months for the next and final chapter. July 15, 2011 is already on my calendar. And I can’t wait for more.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 earns a solid 4 1/2 stars. See it. |
