Not Too Much Sex in Different City
by Danika Klyve, NMTV

Sex and the City 2 welcomes back all the main members of the cast – Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon. Kristin Davis, Chris Noth, David Eigenberg, Jason Lewis and Evan Handler; and also welcomes back writer-director Michael Patrick King. This is King’s second movie, after having a career in television comedy writing and producing. (His first movie was Sex and the City, the first one.)

In this sequel, the four ladies end up getting an all-expense paid trip to Abu-Dhabi, where Samantha has been invited to do some PR work with a local hotel. While in the United Arab Emirates, Charlotte (Davis) worries that he husband will have an affair with the nanny, Samantha (Cattrall) tries to find ways to keep her youth and find men, Miranda (Nixon) starts to loosen up for the first time in her life after quitting her job, and Carrie (Parker) runs into Aiden for the first time in many years.

The plot is simple and leads to no real character development, and there doesn’t seem to be any real reason the film writers decided to set this movie in the desert, because at least 95% of the plot could take place anywhere that’s not New York City. The only real point is that they are away from home. But, the desert is exotic, and moves the woman out of their city luxuries.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a “Sex and the City” fan, but I’ve never liked Carrie because of her consistently epic character flaws. And this time around it’s the same thing. After running into Aiden, she of course has to have a quiet dinner alone with him in a romantic restaurant. Never mind the fact that she has been married to John “Mr. Big” Preston for two years. More poor decisions are made on Carrie’s part, leading to marital problems for her when she’s half way around the world. I feel that at this point in her life she should have learned from similar mistakes, and that she should also be over her impulsive/obsessive shoe buying that shows the restraint of a teenager.

Despite Carrie’s continued flaws, and the uninspired decision to set this film in the desert, this movie does cause plenty of laughs and smiles. The characters are who they always have been, and this movie is a fun 2 ½ hours for any real “Sex and the City” fan. Anyone who does not like the show or who is not familiar with the characters should steer clear though – this is a step down from the series. 3 out of 5 stars.
