The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
by Danika Klyve, NMTV

In his first movie in three years, the relatively unknown director David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy) tackles the third part of the Twilight quadrilogy. It’s in this film that Bella finally chooses if she’s in love with Edward or Jacob, but I won’t spoil her decision here.

Bella’s dad doesn’t really care for Edward Cullen (the vampire), and wants his daughter to spend more time with Jacob (the werewolf). Now, for what reason Bella wants to be around either of these crazy death creatures is not explained in this segment of the saga. As someone who’s hasn't seen part one or part two, I learned that werewolves do not like to wear shirts, and are almost all good-looking guys. I also learned that vampires have orangish-yellow eyes, live forever, and emanate no body heat. Also, everyone is in love with Bella. I got the impression this was about all the back story anyone really needed to know.

In Eclipse, a new troop of newborn vampires is springing up in the nearby Metropolis of Seattle, and killing humans almost every night. The Cullen coven does not approve of this, and through “mind reading powers” (a.k.a. lazy storytelling) they determine that these bloodthirsty vampires want Bella. So to save the lovely Bella, the vampires and werewolves team up for one of the largest scale wars either of these clans has ever been a part of.

This movie will only successfully play to the audience it already has waiting, and will leave all outsiders asking way to many questions, such as: “Why would she date a vampire?” “Why does she want to become undead?” “Aren’t there any normal guys in northern Washington?” “Why are vampires ceramic in battle?” “What does Edward do all night when he lays in bed with Bella, since he doesn’t sleep?” “Why does everyone overact?”

As a Twilight outsider, I was bored, but this film did do a good job in some of the technical aspects of filmmaking, such as lighting, cinematography and so on, but not well enough to let me forget that I just didn’t care about the characters. For me, 1.5 out of 5 stars.
