Fright Night, however, proves that an occasional remake of a not-so-popular movie can be very fun.
In Fright Night, the story focuses on high school student Charley Brewster, played by Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator Salvation). Charley has a new neighbor who seems a little suspicious. At the same time, a number of Charley’s classmates begin to disappear. One of Charley’s good friends determines that neighbor Jerry, played by Colin Farrell, is a vampire. After Jerry threatens Charley’s mother and girlfriend, Charley seeks the help of a professional theatrical vampire slayer.
Thankfully, Fright Night doesn’t take itself too seriously. If this movie tried to be a serious vampire-slasher flick, it would not work. There are many jokes along the way, showing that the writers understand that the plot is a little out there, even joking that the name Jerry isn’t the name of a real vampire. I think it’s safe to call this flick a comedic horror.
While this movie won’t stand out long-term in the genre of horror, it is a much better option than the standard Halloween fare. It is less gross and more enjoyable for the average person. What this movie does show is that Anton Yelchin is a rising star who will only continue to grow in fame as he continues to prove that he can command many different roles on the screen. It also proves what I have known for years – Colin Farrell is one creepy man. No longer debatable.
In the end, it’s a pretty decent movie that won’t leave you with nightmares – but might make you wonder about your neighbors. 3 out of 5 stars. |
