Super Duper 8
by Danika Klyve, NMTV

Super 8 is likely to be the best movie of the summer. It's going to be very tough for anything else to keep up with the witty writing, superior casting, explosive action, and just plain fun that this film lays out from the opening scene. The Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams combination had me a little worried that this flick would end of being the weirdest, most mysterious, alien-filled movie ever made, but delightfully, I was wrong.

The film is set in 1979, and follows a group of young boys on their film-making adventure. During the filming of one of the scenes, a nearby train derails, and the boys narrowly avoid death. As they watch the train cars fly, it becomes clear that one of the train cars has something very powerful and very alive inside of it. The boys quickly flee, and days later they realize that they got the whole thing on film.

In the meantime, strange occurrences being happening in the nearby town. Dogs run away, car engines disappear overnight, and people start to go missing. All of which the Air Force refuses to comment on.

The story, the dialogue, and the technical components of this film are all great, but the real standout element of the film is the authenticity that the film presents as a whole. The entire group of child actors are all fantastic, as are their relationships with each other and their families. None of the main characters are a simple caricature, but come to life as a real believable person.

The best part of this movie, however, is that it is fun. Just plain fun. I had a smile on my face throughout the whole movie. If you see one movie this summer, make it Super 8. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
