What could be better than partying with a bunch of people from high school that you didn't like in the first place? What could be better than hating your job, getting arrested, and throwing up on yourself? It turns out, in the 80's, this is the formula to the greatest day of someone's life. Call me crazy, but it doesn't sound that great, and neither is a movie about this night.

Take Me Home Tonight follows Matt Franklin (Topher Grace) on one crazy night, that turns into a coming of age experience. This MIT graduate doesn't know what he wants to do with his life, so after college he moves in with his parents and gets a job at the video store. While working at the mall, he encounters his high school crush, lies about his job, and gets invited to a party that promises to be epic. He goes to the party, seduces his former crush, continues to lie about his job, gets arrested for drug possession and driving a stolen car, and ends up nearly drowning in a pool. And he learns a couple valuable lesson along the way.
This movie is pretty cliché, but in the same way that the majority of popular movies made in the 80's all were: introduce a longing for a certain romantic partner. Get rejected by partner. Make a couple minor life changes. Partner see that you are exactly who they are looking for. Not to give away the ending to the cliché plot, but yes, he gets the girl.
It's not all bad. There are funny moments in the film, but generally you know what's going to happen before it does, and that's kind of a let down. A few smiles and a few giggles do not equal anything great, but it's certainly not a disappointment for a corny comedy set in the 80's.
Expect awkward sex scenes, drug use, and grand theft. Expect a few laughes and the feeling that you just watched a very dirty version of a John Hughes movie. 2.5 out of 5 stars. |
