Minnesota 5th Congressional District

Minnesota has eight congressional districts that each elect one representative every other year.  The fifth district is the smallest in area, and includes Spring Lake Park, Hilltop, Columbia Heights, Crystal, New Hope, Robbinsdale, Golden Valley, Saint Louis Park, Hopkins, Richfield, St. Anthony, Fridley and Minneapolis.  The 2010 candidates running for U.S. House of Representatives in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District are:

 Tom Schrunk (IP)

About Me:  Tom Schrunk is an artist living in St. Anthony Village. His work is found in three continents, in the collections of national leaders and royalty. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in India and also served as a Peace Corps Recruiting Officer and Training Officer. He has been active in youth sports and served on the boards of nonprofits, and has been awarded four U.S. Patents.

He sees the country hampered by a short-sighted lawmaking process which caters to the demands of increasingly partisan political parties and to moneyed interests who are able to obtain access to lawmakers.

He has authored the “Pledge to the Citizens”, a ten point list of how he will conduct himself as a legislator.

Further information is available on his website, www.schrunk2010.com.

Important Issues: His most important issue is misdirected lawmaking which favors those with access while creating deficits for the future. Before passing a law, researching fully the causes will aid in implementing the most effective cure. As an example, item #2 in his “Pledge” is:

Before voting on any proposed legislation, I will seek the analysis of non-partisan experts on the subject, and hold their findings above political consideration.”

His campaign theme is “Take the Long View”, and his interests are dealing with Social Security, advancing research in medicine such as Diabetes and Altzheimers, research on alternate fuels, stopping our dependence on fossil fuels.

Other interests are bringing our educational system back to world-class performance, and stopping the flow of jobs overseas.

Political Philosophy:
Tom describes himself as, “A fiscal conservative, social moderate, and centrist”. It does not matter if the political benefit for a bill goes to the Republican Party or the Democratic party. The only thing that matters is that the citizens are well represented.

The first and last items in his “Pledge to the Citizens” illustrates his philosophy;
Item #1: “My first interest is to insure the long-term vitality of this country.”
Item #10: It is my intention to be the steward, in the fullest sense of the word, for the best interests of the citizens of Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, and of the American People.

 Lynne Torgerson (i)

About Me:
Lynne Torgerson, your Stateswoman for Congress in the Fifth Congressional District in the State of Minnesota, was born and raised in the Minneapolis, MN and the surrounding suburbs. Lynne has lived and worked in Minneapolis for essentially the past 30 years. After graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1985 with degrees in Political Science and Psychology, Ms. Torgerson attended law school at William Mitchell College of Law in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where she was on Law Review and Moot Court. She obtained her Juris Doctor degree, graduating with honors.

Ms. Torgerson, as a lawyer, has had her own successful law practice in downtown Minneapolis since 1995 and was recently awarded Attorney of the year by Minnesota Lawyer. She is active in her church and keeps athletics through aerobics. Lynne Torgerson is now running for Congress in the Fifth Congressional District, in the State of Minnesota, which means she is seeking to represent you in the United States House of Representatives. Ms. Torgerson's background makes her a perfect fit for this position.

Important Issues:  The important issues to Lynne are: Keeping jobs in America and preserving the American dream, protecting the Constitution, education people on the threat of political ideological Islam, and the ties between the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR), , and Incumbent Keith Ellison. Lynne believes we need to level the playing field to prevent companies from outsourcing jobs, which keeps jobs in America and preserves the American dream. As a Constitutional Lawyer Lynne will passionately protect the Constitution, especially our 1st and 2nd amendment rights. People need to be educated on the threat to America that is posed by political ideological Islam, which seeks to replace the Constitution with Sharia law. Finally, people need to know about CAIR, who was recently named as a coconspirator in funding terrorism, and Incumbent Keith Ellison’s connect to CAIR. Ellison receives funds from CAIR and fundraises for CAIR.

Political Philosophy:  Torgerson’s political philosophy is that she cannot be put in a box; she does not neatly fit into the two-party, Republican versus Democrat system. Depending on the issues, she could be conservative, moderate, or liberal. This position allows her to reach out to constituents on both sides of the isle, while forming new coalitions, to truly serve the interests of the people, not the parties. That’s why the people of Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District should vote Torgerson for Congress in 2010.
