Mayors Take Ten Challenge

In addition to being important on a state level, the census is also important to individual communities.  It impacts representation in Washington, but also controls district lines for county commissioner, the state legislature and more. Centerville had an 85% response rate 10 years ago, exceeding the county average, and this year, Mayor Mary Capra has her sites set even higher.

"I'm hoping for at least 90%," said Mayor Capra.

To help ignite some passion locally, the census bureau is challenging local mayors to try to get a better response rate than their neighbors.  Mayors across the state will be able to track their city’s participation online. Mayor Capra hasn’t formally challenged any neighboring cities yet, but is considering challenging Lino Lakes. 10 years ago, Lino Lakes had a 4% better return rate on census forms.
