From the moment the curtain goes up and the opening number is performed you know that you are in for an enjoyable experience with Nine. Rob Marshall the director of 2003’s Oscar winning Best Picture Chicago is back with another stunning musical film. This time the film is headlined by an all star cast lead by arguably the best actor working in Hollywood today, Daniel Day-Lewis. Lewis is joined by Judi Dench, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Fergie, Kate Hudson, and the wonderful Sophia Loren.

The film is set in Italy in the 1960’s. The story follows Guido Contini (Lewis) a renowned film director who after a series of flops is trying to make a comeback. Contini drifts between reality and fantasy as he is visited several times by his dead mother (Loren). Contini is a troubled man who has lost his creative touch. Contini, a married man, has become estranged from his wife and with reality and this story shows the downfall of a once powerful and beloved director.

Nine is highlighted by the many magnificent musical numbers in the film. Whether it was the large and loud numbers from Kate Hudson and Fergie or the simple quite numbers from Marion Cotillard, each song was a joy to watch. While sometimes you get actors that have no business being in a musical film these actors do not disappoint with their singing and dancing. Marshall conducts such breathtaking and stunning scenes throughout the film leaving you wanting to hear and see more. Marshall was able to take so many great individual performances and mold them together into an uplifting and entertaining film.

The message that this film left me with was a message of love. Contini has lost the ability to love, and with that he has lost his ability to create. I saw this story as a story about a man who was looking to regain his ability to love, and how Marshall brings that to the screen is what makes this film a must see for me. I give Nine a solid 4 out of 5 stars, a great film to see with friends or family this holiday season. The film does have a heavy dose of sexual content making it inappropriate for younger children.
