Public Access

Have you ever wanted to make your own TV show? North Metro TV will show you how. Each and every month, NMTV offers a free How to Make a TV Show class series. This class, which meets once a week at 6PM, usually on Wednesdays, is designed to teach students how to make their own shows. The class includes hands on instruction on how to operate our cameras and studio equipment as well as lectures on interview technique, non-linear editing, production tips and tricks, and everything else you need to know to make your own TV shows step by step.

Best of all, students will actually work on a professionally produced TV show during the class. That’s right, during the third week of this new class series, our students actually act as the directors, camera operators, and sound engineers on an episode of In Focus, a brand new talk show that goes behind the scenes of some of our great public access programs. That way, each and every student who takes the course leaves with one show already under their belts. That show then airs the following month on Channel 14, so students can see their work on the air and their names in the credits.

Once they’ve completed the How to Make a TV Show Class, students are welcome to take optional, additional classes and to work as the volunteer crew for other, exciting productions. Additional classes include a Final Cut Pro non-linear editing tutorial, intermediate camera operation, and documentary and short film workshops. Students also get to participate in our regular NMTV Public Access Productions, which include holiday specials, special projects, and the talk show Wednesdays with Barbie, all of which can be seen on Channel 14 or at the Public Access Productions page on our website. All classes and volunteer opportunities include a free DVD copy of the completed program and a detailed text book, complete with pictures and diagrams, about everything covered in the class.

Of course, our volunteers don’t have to wait for us to work on a TV show either. Once they’ve taken the basic class series, all NMTV volunteers can use our equipment and studios to create their own shows about whatever they want and we’ll air them on Channel 14. These programs really can be about whatever you want and we have always had an amazing variety of shows focusing on subjects including politics, religion, economics, comedy, drama, art, music and so much more. Whatever your idea, whatever your perspective, there’s a home for it on NMTV. And, best of all, we’ll never censor you. True, commercial advertising is a no-no, as are illegal activity and pornography, but pretty much anything else is welcome. We are a true first amendment institution and we want to help you broadcast your ideas and opinions no matter what they are.

All of our classes are taught by Eric Houston, our Studio Manager and lead instructor. Eric has 8 years of professional television production experience under his belt. He has a degree in Film and Television from the University of Notre Dame and, before coming to North Metro TV, he worked for such clients as NBC, HGTV, The DIY Network, and The Travel Channel. Eric also oversees all of the Public Access Productions that you can volunteer on and is always available to help you with any questions as you make your own shows.

And did we mention all of our classes and facilities are absolutely free to citizens of Blaine, Centerville, Circle Pines, Ham Lake, Lexington, Lino Lakes, and Spring Lake Park?

To get started, visit our regularly updated class schedule page to figure out which dates will work for you. And if you’re busy this month, don’t worry, the How to Make a TV Show class is offered almost every month of the year. Usually, the class is held on Wednesday nights, but we make every effort to occasionally offer the classes on Tuesday or Thursday nights to accommodate those students who are busy on Wednesday nights. Once you’ve picked the time that is best for you, e-mail Eric, our studio manager and instructor, to reserve your place.

The NMTV Public Access community is always growing and expanding and we can’t wait to make you a part of it.
