Will You Remember Me?
by Ben Hayle, NMTV

Robert Pattinson is most commonly referred to as “that guy from the Twilight movies”.  In his newest film Remember Me he tries to break out of the Twilight mold and show off his real acting skills.  Pattinson is joined by Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, Emilie de Ravin, and Lena Olin in this look inside a broken man and his broken family.

In Remember Me, Tyler (Pattinson) is a rebellious young man living in New York City.  Tyler barely has a relationship with his father (Brosnan) as a result of a tragedy separated their family. Tyler didn't think anyone could possibly understand what he was going through until the day he met Ally (Ravin). He asked her out as a part of a bet with his best friend, but as he starts to get to know her he begins to fall in love. Through their love, he begins to find happiness and meaning in his life. However as you probably expected, hidden secrets are revealed, tragedy lingers in the air, as the circumstances that brought them together threaten to tear them apart.

This movie has some good moments, but at the same time it is completely predictable from the opening scene.  Knowing next to nothing about the film as I sat down in the theatre I honestly knew what the climax of the film would be after 5 minutes.  The film starts in 1991 and after the first scene we fast forward 10 years to 2001 and the film takes place in New York City.  I will let you use your imagination from there to figure out what event is portrayed in the films climax.

With that said I will say that the journey to the predictable ending was enjoyable for the most part.  I thought that the acting performances from Pattinson, Brosnan, Cooper and young Ruby Jerins who plays Tyler’s younger sister were quite solid.  Pattinson showed that he has acting skills and he should be able to have success outside of the world of Twilight.  While the movie featured solid performances from some actors, the performance of Emilie de Ravin was not on par with the rest of the cast, Pattinson had to try and carry their scenes which he was not able to do.  While I thought that Pattinson showed his skills he is still not good enough to “carry” another actor.

While I do not think that Remember Me will stick with you for long after you leave the theatre it is still an enjoyable movie.  The film runs long, with about 90 minutes of material stretched into a 128 minute film. However, with that said I still found Remember Me to be an adequate film especially as we are in the film abyss between award season and summer blockbuster season.  Remember Me earns 2.5 out of 5 stars.
