Jared Nelson celebrates after putting down his 6th trey of the afternoon. Shot provided by Mike Bouchard
The
Panthers came into the day with a record of 16-2 after losing to the #1
team in class 3A last night, the Benilde St. Margaret's Red Knights.
Last night was a packed house at Spring Lake Park as the #1 & #2
teams in state gave the crowd everything they came to see. Sean Scott
was once again unbelievable, posting 36 points and a solid all around
game against a great defense.
Today they woke up early and headed
out to Centennial for an afternoon game on short sleep and it was
noticeable. The Panthers Sean Scott started the day off pretty slow and
picked up 2 quick fouls in the 1st half and looked to be a little
sluggish after the big game last night.
The Cougars on the other
hand were well rested coming of a big win against Blaine on Thursday.
Quinton Peterson was dominating under the basket all game and finished
with 16 rebounds on the day.
The
magic started happening for the Cougars when Jared Nelson went
"unconscious' according to Jeff Dinsmore's description, and started
blasting 3 pointers at will. The Panthers had enough after he hit on his
6th one of the night and called a timeout. But to the Panthers dismay,
he was not yet finished and struck gold on 2 more shortly after the
timeout and finished the game with a whopping 8 3-point buckets. Even
more impressive was the fact he only attempted 10.
The Panthers
tried to battle back but came up short missing on all their 3-point
attempts in the final 2 minutes and the Cougars walked out victorious,
defeating the #2 ranked 3A team in state. Watch the post-game interviews here. You can watch the game online here.

Thursday night the Blaine Bengals made the trip to Centennial for a
Boys High School Basketball game. North Metro TV was at the game to air
it LIVE! on channel 15.
It was a
big game as both teams came into the contest tied at 7-5 in the
Northwest Suburban Conference. Blaine had some recent success winning 3
of their last 4 games and Centennial was struggling a little bit without
their star forward, Mitchell Kuck, who missed the last 3 games with
back spasms.
Blaine senior guard, Tanner Schumacher, got off to
an early start knocking down 2 treys in the opening minutes of the game
but Centennial's Daniel Becken, who had been filling in for the injured
Mitchell Kuck, led Centennial in the first half and got the cougars out
to a 35-26 halftime lead.
And did I mention Mitchell Kuck made
his return on Thursday. Well he did and he made quite an impression with
the limited time he spent on the court as he threw down a huge dunk
after he stole the ball away at mid court in the waning minutes of the
game. Kuck finished with 11 points in his debut back from injury.
Alex
Cappard had a big night for the Bengals, he finished with 19 points and
Josh Limberg had 18. The Bengals kept things close in the 2nd half but
were just out performed by Daniel Becken and Quinton Peterson, who
combined for 39 of the Cougars 66 points on the night. Cougars Win! Playback Times on Channel 15: Thursday, February 2: LIVE! at 6:56PM Friday, February 3: Noon & 7:00PM Saturday, February 4: 11:00AM

The
Panthers came in to tonights match 9-11-1 and they looked to pick up
another win against a team they had previously defeated 5-0 to win their
Holiday Hockey Tournament back in December. But things didn't go quite
as planned.
In the 1st period Sadie Baker of Minneapolis scored
at 16:40 assisted by Katy Fuller and Minneapolis took a 1-0 lead into
the 1st intermission even though they only had 3 shots on goal to the
Panthers 9.
In the 2nd period Taylor Patterson scored at 7:58 to
tie the game up but only 19 seconds later SLP/STA gave up what would
become the game clinching goal to Sadie Baker.
Hannah Hilden-Reid
was completely dominating in the game. She recorded 29 saves on the
night and stepped up huge in the 3rd period to give the Novas only their
2nd victory in their last 10 games.

things up but shortly after that Alec Baer put the Orioles up 2-1 to
end the first period.

Tanner Schumacher attempting a 3-Pointer against Forest Lake. Shot provided by Eric Svensk
The
Bengals entered the contest 6-5 so far in this young season and they
got off to a hot start on Defense limiting the Rangers to just 4 points
in the first 8 minutes of the game.
Noah Davis, Forest Lake
Forward, got things going at the midpoint of the 1st half and the
Rangers came climbing back until Blaine Star Guard, Tanner Schumacher,
went on an insane run of 5 3-Pointers in a row and Blaine took a 36-21
halftime lead.
In the 2nd half Blaine turned the ball over on
nearly every other play it seemed and the Rangers' Anthony Tyler, 20
points on the night, took advantage alongside fellow teammate Noah
Davis who knocked down a big 3-pointer with :54 seconds left in the
game to pull within 6 points. But a few costly mistakes by Forest Lake
gave Blaine the opportunity hold on to the lead and eventually win 59-50
to improve to 7-5 on the season.
Key Players: Tanner Schumacher, Blaine: 20 Points; Anthony Tyler, Forest Lake: 20 Points; Josh Limberg, Blaine: 15 Points.

Jill Conrad had an exceptional night for the Cougars on Tuesday. Shot provided by Devry Foss. The
Maple Grove Crimson made the Journey over to Centennial on Tuesday
night for a Northwest Suburban basketball showdown. The Crimson were
coming off a 4 game slide, losing most of them by just a point or two.
They got off to a great defensive start in Tuesdays game thanks in part
to Emily Eckberg who finished the night with 10 points. But the Cougars,
led by Daizjah Williams with 17 points on the night, finished the first
half strong and took a 36 to 25 lead entering the 2nd Half.
In
the 2nd half the Cougars got off to a huge start with baskets and some
great Defense by Jill Conrad, who finished the night with 14 points. But
the Crimson came storming back with the play of Junior Guard Angie
Davinson, who had her season high in scoring with 25 points for the
Crimson on the night. But thanks to Senior Center Kristen Nordby and her
2 3-pointers late in the game, Centennial held off the Crimson for
their 10th win of the season and moved to a tie for 1st place in the
Northwest Suburban Standings with Osseo.

Saturday, January 7: 4:00PM Sean Scott goes up for the dunk after stealing the ball in the 1st half of the game.
Tuesday
night at Spring Lake Park High School basketball fired up in the North
Suburban Conference with a matchup that featured the two teams who faced
off in the Section Championship game last season at Irondale H.S.
The
Panthers are looking for a little revenge since Irondale de-railed the
Panthers chance to get to the Target Center for State Basketball a
season ago. Sean Scott was on fire in the championship game until his
season ended abruptly with a compound fracture to his finger in the 2nd
half. The Panthers tried to hold off Irondale but the Knights' offense
proved to much in the waning minutes of the game and they stole the
Section Title from Spring Lake Park.
